In the shattered church, Johann Schmidt presses the etched eye of a serpent on the ancient wooden artwork. A hidden drawer slides open, bathing him in a radiant blue light. He gazes into it, his face alight with triumph. “And the Führer digs for trinkets in the desert.”
Schmidt peers into the box, the glow illuminating his features. “You have never seen this, have you?”
The Church Keeper, his voice steady but strained, replies, “It’s not for the eyes of ordinary men.”
“Exactly,” Schmidt says, his tone sharp with conviction.
He snaps the box shut, the light vanishing. “Give the order to open fire,” he commands.
The Church Keeper’s eyes blaze with defiance. “Fool! You cannot control the power you hold. You will burn!”
Schmidt’s lips curl into a cold smile. “I already have.”
