In the smoky British pub, Steve Rogers nods at Peggy Carter. “Sounds good.”
Peggy glances at the rowdy 107th table. “I see your top squad is prepping for duty.”
Bucky Barnes leans in, flashing a charming grin. “You don’t like music?”
“I do, actually,” Peggy replies, her gaze fixed on Steve. “I might even, when this is all over, go dancing.”
Bucky chuckles, undeterred. “Then what are we waiting for?”
“The right partner,” Peggy says pointedly, never glancing at Bucky’s charming ways. “0800, Captain.” She turns and strides out.
“Yes, ma’am. I’ll be there,” Steve calls after her.
Bucky, stunned, slumps back. “I’m invisible. I’m turning into you. It’s like a horrible dream.”
Steve pats his arm, smirking. “Don’t take it so hard. Maybe she’s got a friend.”
The next morning, in a London lab, Howard Stark tinkers with the glowing device Steve retrieved from the Hydra factory. “Emission signature is unusual. Alpha and beta ray neutral. Though I doubt Rogers picked up on that. Seems harmless enough. Hard to see what all the fuss is about.”
The device suddenly detonates, a blast sending Howard’s assistant sprawling across the room.
